SPACE-SAVING 10-PORT AND 18-PORT I/O EXPANDERS WITH IRQ-bar DRIVE LEDS WITH INTEGRATED 240-STEP PWM BRIGHTNESS CONTROL AND 2-PHASE BLINK

SUNNYVALE, CA-November 12, 2003-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX7314/MAX7316 general-purpose I/O expanders. Through a 400kHz, 2-wire, SMBus/I2C-compatible serial interface, the devices provide microprocessors (µPs) and microcontrollers (µCs) with either 16 (MAX7314) or 8 (MAX7316) 5V-tolerant input/output ports, plus one output-only port and one input-only port. The output-only port can be assigned as an interrupt output IRQ-bar for input transition detection. Packaged in compact 3mm x 3mm 16-pin QFN (MAX7316), 4mm x 4mm 24-pin QFN (MAX7314), and QSOP (MAX7314/MAX7316) packages, their low standby current and small package size are ideal for portable applications.

Powering up as inputs in the default state, the I/O ports can be configured by the master as an input or an open-drain output. Each overvoltage-tolerant I/O port is capable of sinking up to 50mA at 5.5V. A reset input (RST-bar) clears the serial interface and restores the outputs to their default power-up state of high impedance.

These MAX7314/MAX7316 have integrated 8-bit PWM brightness control. The first four bits control the global intensity of all LED outputs from fully off to fully on, simplifying brightness ramp up and down. The remaining four bits further break down the globally set current into 16 steps of brightness control for each individual LED. Alternatively, a single 8-bit control with 240 intensity steps can set all outputs at once.

Each output has independent 2-phase blink functionality. Ports can be individually configured as off or on during each blink phase, or to ignore the blink control. The blink period is controlled by a clock input (up to 1kHz) on the BLINK pin, or by a register. The blink input can also be used as a logic control to turn the LEDs on and off, or as a general-purpose input (GPI).

The MAX7314/MAX7316 have one address pin that provides four unique slave IDs. Both devices operate from a 2.0V to 3.6V supply over the automotive temperature range (-40°C to +125°C). Supply current for the MAX7314 is 8.5µA (typ) and standby current is just 1.2µA (typ). Supply current for the MAX7316 is 7µA (typ) and standby current is just 1.2µA (typ).

Prices start at $1.75 for the MAX7314 and $1.28 for the MAX7316 (1000-up, FOB USA).
