MAXIM'S 8- AND 16-PORT I/O EXPANDERS WITH IRQ AND LOW STANDBY CURRENT ARE IDEAL FOR PORTABLE APPLICATIONS
SUNNYVALE, CA-November 6, 2003-Maxim Integrated Products
(NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX7313/MAX7315 general-purpose I/O expanders. These ICs are packaged in compact 3mm x 3mm x 0.8mm 16-pin QFN (MAX7315), 4mm x 4mm x 0.8mm 24-pin QFN (MAX7313), and QSOP packages. The devices interface 5V-tolerant input/output ports with microprocessors (µPs) and microcontrollers (µCs) through a 400kHz, 2-wire, SMBus-/I2C-compatible serial interface. The MAX7315 has eight I/O ports and the MAX7313 has sixteen I/O ports. Both devices' IRQ-bar interrupt output provides transition detect for I/Os configured as inputs, or can be configured as a 17th (MAX7313) or 9th (MAX7315) I/O port.
While powering up as inputs in the default state, the I/O ports can be configured by the master as an input or an open-drain output. Each overvoltage-tolerant I/O port is capable of sinking up to 50mA at 5.5V.
Each device has integrated 8-bit PWM brightness control. The first 4 bits control the global intensity of all LED outputs from fully off to fully on, simplifying brightness ramp up and down. The remaining 4 bits further breakdown the globally set current into 16 steps of brightness control for each individual LED. Alternatively, a single 8-bit control can set all outputs at once with 240 intensity steps.
Each output has 2-phase blink functionality. The ports are individually configured to be off or on during each blink phase or to ignore the blink control. The blink period is controlled by a register.
Three address pins use 4-level logic to provide 64 unique slave IDs. As a result, address conflicts with other system devices are avoided, enabling many devices to be connected easily on the same bus.
The MAX7313/MAX7315 operate from a 2.0V to 3.6V supply over the automotive temperature range (-40°C to +125°C). The MAX7313's supply current is 57µA (typ) and standby current is 1.2µA (typ). The MAX7315's supply current (interface running, PWM enabled) is 51µA (typ) and standby current is 1.2µA (typ).
Prices start at $1.52 for the MAX7313 and $1.08 for the MAX7315 (1000-up, FOB USA).
