SMALLEST SOT STEP-UP DC-DC CONVERTERS OPERATE ON JUST 1.5µA

SUNNYVALE, CA-August 31, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1722/MAX1723/MAX1724, the smallest, low-cost, high-efficiency step-up DC-DC converters able to operate on just 1.5µA of quiescent supply current. They come in a thin 5-pin SOT23 package, which is only 1mm high, and require only three external components for the complete circuit.

They feature a proprietary current-mode control scheme that provides fast transient response and allows these devices to operate with physically small external components. Typical external components are two 10µF capacitors and a low-cost 10µH inductor. Internal synchronous rectification ensures high efficiency and eliminates the external diode required in other SOT step-up DC-DC converters, saving cost and size.

The input voltage range is 0.8V to 5.5V, and startup is guaranteed at 0.91V to accommodate single alkaline cell applications. The output range of the MAX1722 and MAX1723 is 2V to 5.5V and set with two resistors. The MAX1724 output is preset in 100mV increments in the 2.7V to 5V range. The MAX1724 features 0.1µA logic-controlled shutdown and EMI-suppression circuitry, which dampens inductor ringing found in other step-up DC-DCs. The ringing is a source of electromagnetic interference (EMI), and suppressing it permits use in small wireless devices. The MAX1722 also features the EMI suppression, but does not have the shutdown. The MAX1723 has shutdown, but no EMI-suppression circuitry.

The MAX1722EZK, MAX1723EZK, and MAX1724EZK are available in a thin 5-pin SOT23 package screened for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start at $1.22 (1000-up, FOB USA, suggested resale). The MAX1722EVKIT evaluation kit is available to speed design.
