DALLAS SEMICONDUCTOR'S DIRECT-TO-DIGITAL TEMPERATURE SENSOR FIRST TO PROVIDE 256 BYTES OF EEPROM ON-CHIP

 
 

DALLAS, TEXAS-July 14, 1997-The DS1624 Digital Thermometer and Memory, from Dallas Semiconductor, is the first digital temperature sensor to feature 256 bytes of EEPROM on-chip to store temperature-related compensation information. With existing devices, this information must either be stored in a separate EEPROM or in memory in the microcontroller. The DS1624 requires no external components and does not consume precious microcontroller resources.

The EEPROM gives the user a place to store how the crystal's frequency changes over temperature."

The DS1624 achieves the industry's highest resolution for a digital thermometer by outputting temperature directly as a 13-bit 2's complement word. It measures temperature from -55°C to +125°C in 0.03125°C steps-the smallest step size available. This is particularly important for applications that monitor fast rates of temperature change. Thermometer accuracy is 0.5°C across the 0°C to 70°C range. Featuring the widest power supply range of any digital thermometer, the DS1624 operates from 2.7 to 5.5 volts. This wide range and low power requirement make the DS1624 ideal for portable equipment.

The DS1624 uses the popular 2-wire bus architecture featuring 3-bit addressability, which allows users to multi-drop up to eight chips along the bus. The DS1624 thus integrates easily into existing architectures. In fact, any device with a 2-wire interface can be put on the same bus for multi-function capability.

The DS1624 is appropriate for any application that requires thermal compensation, such as temperature-compensated crystal oscillators in cellular telephones, test equipment, or radio systems.

Like all members of Dallas Semiconductor's digital thermometer family, the DS1624 is calibrated at the factory, relieving the user of the need to calibrate. It converts temperature directly, eliminating the need for an A/D converter.

The DS1624 Digital Thermometer and Memory is currently available from stock in 8-pin PDIP and SOIC packages. It is also available on a 2,000-piece SOIC tape and reel.
