DUAL SYSTEM RESET FROM DALLAS SEMICONDUCTOR FIRST TO PROVIDE TWO VOLTAGE OUTPUTS ON ONE CHIP

DALLAS, TEXAS-May 12, 1997-Dallas Semiconductor today announced the DS1834 Dual EconoReset, a single chip that can be powered from either of two voltage inputs: 3V or 5V. Ideal for systems that must monitor two system voltages, the DS1834's power is supplied by the greater of the monitored input voltages, allowing for greater flexibility in operating environments.

DS1834 EconoResetSaid Jerry Miller, product manager, "Using existing solutions, the designer has to power every device in a system off the 3V or the 5V supply and must be concerned with which is available first. With the DS1834, as long as one input is above 1.2 volts, the reset outputs will go to the correct state. This alleviates concerns for the designer and simplifies the design effort.

Systems generally need two or more chips to reliably perform the reset function for systems that have both 3V and 5V components. Said Miller, "If a PC powers up at 3 volts and tries to talk to a 5-volt ISA bus, the system won't initialize properly and might lock up."

The DS1834 monitors three vital system conditions: the 5-volt supply, the 3.3-volt supply, and manual reset. Precision temperature compensated voltage reference and comparator circuits monitor the status of the two power supplies. When an out-of-tolerance condition is detected, an internal power fail signal is generated which forces the reset of the affected supply to an active state. A single pushbutton input resets both outputs. The DS1834 draws a maximum Icc of 50µA, compared to other reset chips which draw as much as 10mA.

Any application using both 3-volt and 5-volt components or bus communications is appropriate for the DS1834 Dual EconoReset. The telecommunications industry is especially suitable, with applications including telephone fiber optic switches, network hubs and routers, and cable TV central office equipment. Other applications include PC servers and workstations, and portable equipment that can be reconfigured based on available supply voltages.

Currently available from stock, the DS1834 Dual EconoReset with CMOS Active Low Output in an 8-pin DIP or SOIC package. Open Drain Active Low output and CMOS Active High Output versions of the DS1834 are also available.

Dallas Semiconductor designs, manufactures and markets CMOS chips and chip-based subsystems. In its 13-year history, the company has sold its products to more than 10,000 customers worldwide.
