NEW QUAD 3V, 2.5Gbps TRANSIMPEDANCE AMPLIFIER PROVIDES HIGH SENSITIVITY WITH MINIMAL POWER CONSUMPTION

SUNNYVALE, CA-December 19, 2000-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX3825 +3.3V, 2.5Gbps quad transimpedance amplifier for optical system interconnects. Maxim’s second-generation, in-house SiGe process technology enables incredibly low jitter performance and low power consumption at low cost. This device forms a complete, high-performance quad 2.5Gbps receiver when combined with the MAX3822* quad 2.5Gbps limiting amplifier. Providing a maximum throughput of 10Gbps, the MAX3825 is ideal for 4-channel parallel 2.5Gbps optical interconnections in SDH/SONET, Gigabit Ethernet, and Fibre Channel systems.

The MAX3825 converts a small photodiode current to a measurable differential voltage. Operating from a single +3.3V supply, the MAX3825 consumes only 93mW of power per channel (370mW with all four channels). The overall transimpedance gain is nominally 3.7 kilohms with a small-signal bandwidth of 2.4GHz. The MAX3825’s low 460nARMS input noise and typical deterministic jitter of 20ps provide a typical sensitivity of -22dBm (BER < 1 x 10-14). A DC cancellation circuit provides a true differential output swing over a wide range of input current levels, thus reducing pulse-width distortion.

The differential CML outputs are back-terminated with 50 ohms to reduce external component count. Each channel has independent supply and ground pads to allow all or any combination of channels to be connected.

Available as dice over a 0°C to +85°C temperature range, the MAX3825U/D is priced at $9.00 (1000-up, factory direct, FOB, USA). Evaluation kits are available.
