COMPLETE CURRENT-SENSE AMPLIFIER IN SOT23 CONSUMES JUST 30µA

SUNNYVALE, CA-October 27, 1999-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX4372, a micropower high-side current-sense amplifier with buffered output in a space-saving 5-pin SOT23 package (only 3mm x 3mm). Unlike other current-sensing techniques (which use low-side sensing), this tiny device prevents disruption of the circuit ground plane by employing a single external resistor between the power supply and the load. The combination of factory-trimmed gain and this external sense resistor lets the user select the full-scale range of the measured current. Three factory-trimmed gains are available: +20V/V (MAX4372T), +50V/V (MAX4372F), and +100V/V (MAX4372H).

The MAX4372 features a wide +2.7V to +28V supply voltage range and draws only 30µA of supply current, while achieving a 275kHz bandwidth (AV = +20V/V). The circuit architecture allows the input common-mode voltage to range from 0V to +28V, independent of the supply voltage. Ground-sensing inputs maintain linearity and keep the output phase from reversing when the input common-mode voltage is near ground. This feature is useful during power-up or power-down transients and during some input fault conditions. The MAX4372 achieves a 0.18% full-scale accuracy.

The MAX4372 is offered in both 5-pin SOT23 and 8-pin SO packages. Prices start from $0.60 (50,000-up, FOB USA).
